Gear boxes and motors

A gearbox is a set of gears that can be added to a motor to drastically decrease speed and/or increase torque. For motor-only applications, the slower the motor speed, the larger the motor needs to be. Large motors can be expensive and may not fit within the allowable envelope space of an application. Using a gearbox with a smaller motor enables the unit to operate at lower speeds.
